The original formula of the series and its success gave rise to two sequels, CSI: Miami (2002) and CSI: New York (2004), based on the teams of forensic scientists in those cities, but it also influenced several later series related to crime. criminal investigation, such as Bones or NCIS among others.
CSI has been recognized as the most popular drama series internationally by the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, which has awarded it the “International Television Audience Award (Best Television Drama Series)” three times. CSI’s worldwide audience is estimated at over 73.8 million viewers in 2009. It was created by Anthony E. Zuiker and is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Parents Television Council criticized the gratuitous level of graphic violence and images of sexual content shown in the series. Despite this, CSI became the most-watched show on American television in 2002. The success of the series encouraged CBS to produce a CSI franchise, starting in May 2002 with the spin-off CSI: Miami. and then with CSI: New York. As of 2008, CSI claims an average cost of $262,600 for a 30 second commercial.
Conception and development
During the 1990s, Anthony E. Zuiker caught the attention of producer Jerry Bruckheimer after writing his first screenplay for a feature film. Bruckheimer wanted an idea for a TV series, Zuiker didn’t have one, but his wife told him about a Discovery Channel show showing forensic techniques and the use of DNA as evidence to solve cases (The New Detectives). Zuiker began spending some of his time with investigators from the Las Vegas Police Department, gradually becoming convinced that it was a good concept for a series.
Bruckheimer agreed and contacted Touchstone Pictures management. Managers at the time liked the format and pitched it to networks like ABC, NBC, and FOX, but their executives decided to pass on. CBS’s head of drama development saw potential in the script, and the network gave William Petersen (who was already under contract to CBS) the opportunity to direct the pilot. Network executives liked it, so they decided to quickly include the series in their lineup in 2000., the Fridays after the series “The Fugitive”. At first it was thought that CSI would benefit from that show, but by the end of that year, CSI had a much larger audience.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is a drama series about a passionate team of forensic investigators trained to solve crimes the old-fashioned way: by examining evidence. The criminalists walk the crime scene, collect irrefutable evidence and look for the missing pieces that will solve the mystery. The series mixes novel and film noir plots with the scientific investigation necessary to find evidence that illuminates dark crimes, as well as adding stories of ethical interest between investigators and victims.
The series finds its appeal in the alternation between pure science and dramatic history, but also takes advantage of excellent performances, scripts of great quality and depth, innovative special effects and an unusual direction. The story of the characters unfolds slowly throughout the episodes, contradicting the withering, action-focused storytelling of the American film tradition.
