A large part of the body of a little technique: With the Lumix GX800, Panasonic brings a miniaturized GX80 for 550 euros. The small Panasonic Lumix GX800 relies on the proven 16 MP sensor, but forgoes a viewfinder.
Housing and Facilities
What first strikes: the Panasonic Lumix GX800 is still much smaller (106.5 x 64.6 x 33.3 mm) and with 269 g also to 114 g lighter than the Lumix GX80. This puts it in a comparable magnitude as the Lumix GM1, which established three years ago as the world’s smallest system camera Panasonic. Even the 1-inch Edelkompakten such as the Panasonic Lumix LF-1are hardly small.
The plastic housing makes a significant impression and is managed in the style of old rangefinder camera optically – a really good part. It is not really easy to grip despite the roughened leatherette upholstery. Without grip she feels more like a compact because like a system camera. Sealing against dust and water spray are anyway not to expect in this price range.
Pretty much everything to the victim, what does not belong to the core functions of a camera fell on the Panasonic Lumix GX800 miniaturization.Viewfinder: deleted, but there is yes a display. Hot shoe: deleted, who is already a Flash on a camera. The built-in pop-up Flash works with a sync speed of 1/160 s and will be folded if necessary with a slide out of the housing. With code 4.2 at ISO 100, it is suitable for light fill-in work, but does not make the night to the day.
It could not be able to paint the battery for obvious reasons, but was shrunk to miniature and is underpowered with 680 mAh according to. The slot for a microSD card sits next to the battery. This format is annoying, because the tiny cards are not only tricky handling, but can be pushed to transfer data only via adapter into the card slot of the notebook
It’s handy that the Panasonic Lumix GX800 has a Wi-Fi module on board, about the recording wireless radio settle to corresponding remote stations. The GX800 can be thus also easily remotely controlled via Smartphone.
Operation and Display
The operation of the Panasonic Lumix GX800 is based on the concept of in-house Edelkompakten: A mode dial on the top, a knurled wheel with four-way button, a shutter release button with on / off switch – it’s basically on mechanical controls. The mode dial offers access to the P -, S -, A – and M modes, an intelligent automatic feature, film, Panorama, styles, scenes and three custom functions. Primarily to make the other settings via touch input on the 3-inch display.
This is not always easy, and even for frequently used settings such as ISO, you must shimmy through the menus. It’s make sense, the Fn button (two back and two more above the display) to prove with the ISO dial.Otherwise is the 3-inch display standard; Resolution, brightness and contrast are very good, so you miss the viewfinder only in exceptional cases. The display is not rotating and folds himself only to the top – that but full 180 °. So also Selfies succeed easily.
Autofocus and Metering
MP, the GX800 by the GX80 has taken over their micro-four-thirds sensor with 16. She also dispensed with a low-pass filter. Thanks to micro-four-thirds, the photographer has access to a wide and sophisticated range of lenses, even if they are rather is – to use in practice the pancakes because just so the camera retains its pocket-friendly mini character.
Like all newer Panasonics, the Panasonic Lumix GX800 offers a 4K-Videoauflösung (3840 x 2160 pixels at 30 p). It benefits from it in the photo mode: here the camera shoots 30 frames per second with 8 mega pixels, and you can choose later the right moment of action scenes alone. The aspect ratio can be freely choose themselves. A post-focus function allows road, to set the level of sharpness of the subject after the recording.
Das exposure system, Panasonic “Multi-pattern sensing system” called, has 1728 fields, in addition to the matrix metering Center-weighted or spot metering are selectable – a heritage of GX80.
Also the auto-focus the GX800 relies on proven technologies as “depth from defocus”. Here, the camera from the differences between each blurred images calculates the correct distance. The autofocus uses 49 fields and can be placed on a box with selectable size. Modes such as AFS are / AFF, AFC and manual focus operation selection. While manual focusing, the photographer receives support from a focus Magnifier and the peaking function. With 0.20/0.33 s at 300/30 Lux, goes the autofocus really fast to the point and makes the small camera snapshot-capable.

Panasonic Lumix GX800: Image Quality & Review Conclusion
The image quality is above average for a 16 MPSensor. But even compared with 24 MP sensor the Panasonic Lumix GX800 must hide.LP/bra at ISO 200 will go the GX800 with 1779, the resolution values change hardly up to ISO 800, and only from ISO 1600 it goes slowly down.Dead leaves values, the descent starts already from ISO 800. Also at weak contrast curves significantly lower than those at high temperatures. The curve distance is already evident – at ISO 400 what is visible in decreasing fine drawing.
This helps the change to RAW format. Also denied the GX800 noticeably on edge. This looks although crunchy, but soon also unnatural and can also lead to ghost outlines and artifacts in critical scenes. Basically, the loss of detail are moderate up to ISO 800, moreover they are stronger.
With the Lumix DMC-GX800 Panasonic aims clearly at the generation of Smartphone, are now looking for a right camera including interchangeable lenses is. And the GX800 actually offers an attractive package with good image quality and fast auto focus in the housing of the mini – at a reasonable price. One has to do without in the facilities however. The renunciation of all Clippers don’t need, is consistent. Who don’t want to Miss viewfinder and hot shoe, should access to the better equipped – but hardly more expensive – GX80.
