History

The Capitol at Trenton, c. 1846

According to ehuacom, Trenton was founded in 1679 by Quakers. In 1719 the place was named Trent-towne after William Trent, a landowner in the area. This name was later shortened to Trenton. During the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington crossed the Delaware River on December 26, 1776, to engage in battle with British troops. After this war, Trenton was the federal capital in October and November 1784. It was considered to designate the city as the permanent capital, but the southern states opposed this. In 1790, Trenton became the capital of New Jersey.
